Stone Testing

Working with our UKAS accredited laboratory partners, we manage a comprehensive range of British Standards (BS EN) stone testing methods.

With our partners we provide over 60 outsourced stone testing methods and procedures as well as our own in-house and on-site stone testing using a BSI accredited Pendulum test machine.

Outsourced testing provision includes:

  • Petrographic description
  • Petrographic examination
  • Density (apparent and real)
  • Porosity (open and total)
  • Water absorption at atmospheric pressure
  • Water absorption coefficient by capillarity
  • Microporosity
  • Saturation coefficient
  • Compressive strength
  • Modulus of rupture (3-point)
  • Flexural strength (4-point)
  • Frost resistance
  • Salt crystallisation
  • Thermal shock resistance
  • Sulphur dioxide exposure
  • Acid immersion
  • Sensitivity to changes in appearance produced by thermal cycling
  • Sound speed propagation
  • Static elastic modulus
  • Dynamic modulus of elasticity
  • Linear thermal expansion coefficient
  • Breaking load at dowel hole
  • Microcrack dye testing

  • Petrographic examination
  • Dimensions
  • Water absorption
  • Bending strength
  • Wetting & drying
  • Acid immersion
  • Thermal cycling
  • Freeze/thaw resistance
  • Sulphur dioxide exposure

The selection of material for stone testing is critical, as it must be representative of the material to be produced and supplied. We can offer independent expert advice and sampling services by qualified geologists / stone consultants for stone testing to ensure that representative and traceable samples are obtained.
